Helix Hoop Size Guide: Choose the Right Ring Diameter

Helix Hoop Size Guide: Choose the Right Ring Diameter

A helix ring is a timeless piece of jewelry for adorning the upper cartilage of the ear. Worn alone, it creates a fine and elegant line. Combined with other piercings, it helps build a more personal, precious and balanced ear composition.

But to achieve a comfortable and harmonious result, choosing the right ring size is essential. A ring that is too small may compress the cartilage, while a ring that is too large may feel too loose, move more, or fail to naturally follow the shape of the ear.

In this guide, we help you understand how to choose the right internal ring diameter for your helix piercing.

What ring size should I choose for a helix piercing?

For a helix piercing, the ring size mainly depends on three elements:

  • the exact placement of the piercing on the cartilage;
  • the thickness and shape of your ear;
  • the desired look: fitted, comfortable or slightly more open.

The size of a piercing ring is generally measured by its internal diameter. This refers to the space inside the ring, without including the thickness of the metal.

At SÉBASTIENNE JEWELRY, helix piercing rings are crafted from solid 18K gold, with careful attention to comfort, proportions and how the jewel sits on the ear.

What is the internal diameter of a ring?

The internal diameter is the measurement taken inside the ring, from one inner edge to the other.

This measurement determines how the ring will sit around the ear.

A smaller diameter will create a closer fit, sitting nearer to the cartilage.
A larger diameter will offer more space and a softer, more open look.

For a helix piercing, even a difference of 0.5 mm or 1 mm can visibly change the way the jewelry looks on the ear.

Quick helix ring diameter guide

Internal diameter Desired look Good to know
5 mm Very fitted Suitable only for some piercings placed very close to the edge
6 mm Fitted Discreet look, close to the ear
7 mm Balanced Common size for a comfortable helix ring
8 mm Comfortable Suitable if the piercing is higher or further from the edge
9 mm and above More open More visible look, sometimes necessary depending on anatomy

These indications are general. The right diameter always depends on your anatomy and the exact placement of your piercing.

What is the standard gauge for a helix ring?

The thickness of a piercing ring is also called the gauge.

At SÉBASTIENNE JEWELRY, helix rings are supplied by default with a thickness of 1.2 mm, also known as 16G.

This thickness is one of the most common for healed helix piercings. It offers a good balance between comfort, strength and a precious fine jewelry look.

Important: if your piercing was done or healed with a different thickness, it is best to check your size with your piercer before ordering.

How do I know if my helix ring is too small?

A ring that is too small may put pressure on the cartilage. It can pull on the piercing, mark the skin or create a feeling of compression.

You may need a larger diameter if:

  • the ring feels tight against the ear;
  • the cartilage appears compressed;
  • the jewelry pulls on the piercing hole;
  • you feel discomfort when moving your ear;
  • the ring does not sit naturally.

In this case, it may be better to choose a half size or the next size up.

How do I know if my helix ring is too large?

A ring that is too large is not necessarily uncomfortable, but it can affect the overall look of the jewelry.

It may create too much space between the ring and the ear, move more, or give a less fitted appearance. With fine jewelry, the right diameter helps create a more refined and well-proportioned line.

You may need a smaller diameter if:

  • the ring appears too far from the ear;
  • it moves a lot;
  • it catches easily in the hair;
  • you want a finer look, closer to the cartilage.

What if I need a half size?

Some anatomies require an intermediate size. For example, a 6 mm ring may feel too fitted, while a 7 mm ring may appear too large. In this case, a half size such as 6.5 mm can offer a better balance.

At SÉBASTIENNE JEWELRY, if you need a half size or want to be sure of your choice, we can send you a real-scale 3D plan of the jewel in different sizes.

This plan allows you to visualize the diameter more precisely before production.

To request it, you can contact us before placing your order or mention it in your message.

This guide does not replace the advice of a professional piercer, but it helps you better understand proportions before choosing your jewelry.

How do I measure a ring I already own?

If you already own a ring that fits well, you can measure its internal diameter.

To do so, measure the space inside the ring from one inner edge to the other, without including the thickness of the metal.

Do not measure the external diameter, as this would give a larger size than the actual measurement used to order piercing jewelry.

If you are unsure, you can also send us a photo of your current jewelry placed flat next to a ruler, or ask your piercer for advice.

What size should I choose for a SÉBASTIENNE helix ring?

For a fitted and discreet look, diameters around 6 mm to 7 mm are often preferred, depending on the placement of the piercing.

For a more comfortable fit, or if your piercing is further from the edge of the ear, an 8 mm diameter may be more suitable.

For a perfectly personalized size, we can also assist you with a real-scale plan of the jewel in several diameters.

Each SÉBASTIENNE JEWELRY ring is made to order from solid 18K gold, offering a precious, comfortable piece adapted to the way you wear it.
